Modafinil for Shift Work: What Night Workers Should Know
Shift work sleep disorder is one of the approved uses for modafinil. Off label, night workers also use it for alertness during irregular hours.

Night shifts disrupt the circadian clock. Even when total sleep time is adequate, the sleep often occurs at the wrong biological time, producing grogginess and reduced vigilance during working hours. Modafinil was approved for shift work sleep disorder because it improves wakefulness during the scheduled night shift without the jittery crash associated with high dose caffeine.
The key is timing the dose before the shift begins, typically 30 to 60 minutes prior. Taking it too late can push wakefulness into the post shift sleep window and worsen sleep debt. Some workers split dosing, using a smaller amount at the start of the shift and another booster later, though this increases the risk of residual stimulation.
Long term shift work still carries health risks that modafinil does not fix. Cardiovascular strain, metabolic disruption and social jet lag are real concerns. The compound can help with alertness, but it should be paired with blackout curtains, consistent sleep scheduling and bright light management rather than used as a substitute for rest.
